I've definitely gained some ukulele skills, but what I've really gained is a wonderful community full of amazing people. Our senior group with Chelsie’s leadership gave us the opportunity to join a drumming class.   I am so happy I did.  I love drumming mainly because of Chelsie. I was encouraged by another EarthBeat Music student to check out possible lessons and I joined the Strum in Joy class. I was very new at the ukulele and had never played a string instrument.

I love Chelsie's approach to teaching the ukulele. She breaks down the pieces and we work on different skills and techniques. Everyone in the class is at a different level and we all play together.  She modifies her lessons to fit each students' needs, allowing for progress for everyone. I also enjoy the themes of the music we learn and the threads we create with each other and the community.  We sing, we laugh, and we share our desire to play the ukulele.

I initially became interested in drumming when I happened upon a drum circle at Fish Creek Marina a few years ago. Since then, I would try to attend as many of the public drum circles as possible. I first met Chelsie in 2020 at an Autumnal Equinox event at Hudson Crossing Park. A couple of months later, I took my first djembe class and came home with my newly-purchased drum and have taken every class possible ever since. I even had the amazing opportunity to take several classes with master drummer M'Bemba Bangoura at that time, and since.  When the world was masked and social distancing, we created a drumming community that, to this day, feeds the soul. 

In the past 4+ years, I have added a krin, a dance sangban and a set of dunduns to my menagerie of instruments. I have also been able to take classes with many master musicians.  I am so grateful for Chelsie and the drumily (yes, we are a drumming family) that she has created. Her ability to share these West African rhythms, stories, dances and master teachers/performers with all of us is truly a gift!

Even with no prior experience, Chelsie immediately made me and my partner welcome as part of the "Drumily." Chelsie is a consummate teacher who creates a safe, transformative, and respectful space in a world where such spaces are disappearing at an alarming rate.

I had previously participated in community drum circles hosted by Chelsie and was always very impressed with her genuine warmth and charisma.  She has a way about her that makes you feel welcomed and included.  At that time I was playing Djembe, but due to hand arthritis I've had to switch to the DunDuns, so when I saw she was teaching an intro class for DunDuns, I signed up immediately.

Not only did she display that wonderful, caring positive energy that I saw at the community drum circles, she is also an excellent teacher.  I personally taught for 40 years so it was easy for me to recognize Chelsie's strength in her presentation and her ability to breakdown the rhythm into small and progressive ways making the pattern very easy to learn.

Chelsie is everything you would want in a teacher-knowledgeable, patient, enthusiastic and fun!

For those reasons, she is the best drumming teacher I have had the privilege of taking a class from.

Having no prior experience with EarthBeat Music, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for WomenSing for Peace. I’ve always loved to sing, but ever since elementary school chorus, I’ve carried a bit of a complex about my singing ability. Still, my passion for music—and for promoting peace—pushed me to give it a shot.

Attending the workshop turned out to be one of the most joyful experiences I’ve ever had! After some warm introductions and easy-to-follow guidance, Chelsie led us through simple, beautiful songs from around the world, accompanied by drums and bells. I was encouraged to sing freely and confidently, without judgment.

By the end, I felt uplifted, deeply connected, and filled with a sense of peace. Even months later, just thinking about that day brings a smile to my face and a warm feeling to my heart.

What attracted me to continue learning at EarthBeat Music was driving or walking by the store front, and wondering what the heck was going on there, and how a small arts-oriented business could be thriving in a small town.

I was introduced to djembe drumming and a drum circle at a women’s retreat in the summer of 2021.  I loved it!  Several months later I saw an advertisement for a free 4 lesson session of Hand-Drumming for Seniors given by Chelsie of EarthBeat Music.  I loved that even more!  A week and a half later I bought my first djembe and soon after started to drum with Chelsie by Zoom in the Resilient Drummers class.  The rest is history!

Drumming with Chelsie and the other EarthBeat Music drummers has been a big part of Community for me.  It is uplifting and empowering to drum rhythms together on a regular basis.  The challenge of it all is rather like learning a foreign language and is good for my aging brain.  Perhaps what I treasure most of all is being in Chelsie's sphere of positivity and loving energy on a regular basis.
