Welcome to EarthBeat Music!

Cultivating Empathic & Resilient Communities through musical expression

EarthBeat Music is best represented as a circle.

In many of our group classes, workshops, and meet-ups, we sit in a circle. West African djembe and dundun heads, and ukulele sound holes are circular. A circle reflects Mother Earth, the moon, the sun, the circle of life, the changing seasons, and the principle of reaping what we sow.

We sow love wherever we drum, strum, sing, and dance. Within our logo, the hand is positioned in a gesture of service and support—uplifting and caring for our elders, as well as the next generation.

EARTH.beat・HEART.beat

Scientific research from astrophysics to biology tends to support the idea that rhythm is a fundamental force.

  • DRUMILY

    Drumily:
It’s Chelsie’s portmanteau for the drumming family.
We Drum in Joy, for sure.
But also in gratitude, and sometimes sorrow.
In rhythm. . . more or less.
We drum for healing, community, love, amazement, laughter.
    For Democracy.
    It’s the Drumily.

    — Deke Spierling

  • JOY-FULL!

I wanted to learn to play the ukulele because I thought it would be a fun hobby. Little did I know it would also welcome me into a loving community! I've definitely gained some ukulele skills, but what I've really gained is a wonderful community full of amazing people. Learning under Chelsie's gentle guidance and kind instruction makes learning a new skill completely stress-free. Strumming - and laughing! - with Chelsie and the rest of the ukers is enough to raise anyone's spirits! Love our uke family!

    — Kate Morse

  • ENRICHING

I was seeking an experience to help bring joy and peace to the empty place in my life after my fathers death.  I have gained more than words can express from meeting Chelsie and our Drum in Joy “drumily” members: peace, joy, confidence, friendship and hope. Spending time with these beautiful humans has and will continue to be a highlight of my life’s journey. Learning to play new instruments and not fear learning is wonderful for my soul and brain. I have been playing the Djembe, Krin, Dunduns, Ukulele and even singing, and it all fills my soul with joy and love.  Drumming makes me happy and grounds me with possibility and positivity.  This supportive community even instilled in me a confidence to take an epic journey to join master drummer Bolakada Conde in Guinea, West Africa!

    — Shelly Walsh

  • PEACE

Chelsie Henderson is what the world needs now. Her sole intention is to bring peace across the lands, and she is succeeding. Chelsie is making a great impact as she nurtures an international community through West African drumming, song, and ukulele classes. She is an accomplished musician as well as a gifted and caring teacher. Her classes are a highlight of my week.

    — Gail Barrows

  • RESONANCE

What began as my wife’s discovery soon became an invitation—first to listen, then to join the circle. A drum in hand, I stepped into something unfamiliar yet deeply familiar: rhythm as relationship, learning as community. Chelsie, with joy in her voice and grace in her teaching, guided us not just through patterns, but toward connection. In this shared space of sound and spirit, I found something more than music—I found resonance.

    — Frank Barnes

  • JOURNEY

Learning to play the Djembe and the Doundouns has been a fantastic journey thanks to Chelsie. She is so patient, knowledgeable, and truly passionate about drumming and supportive of West African music and musicians. She tailors our lessons to my individual needs and learning style, making sure I'm always challenged but never overwhelmed. Chelsie introduced me to the joy of drumming and for that I will be forever grateful.

    — Mary Ellen Hill-Pierce

  • TRANSFORMATIVE

I started my musical journey when I was very young. I gave it up to work and raise a family and do all the things we have to do in life, but I always missed it so much. I met Chelsie 8 years ago and began studying djembe, ukulele and singing with her.  I have gained back my authentic self that I lost in being everything to everyone else.  If you love music, or dream about the possibility - just do it.  EarthBeat Music is all about music and joy!

    — Cindy Vanderwerker

  • HARMONY

Since I have started drumming, dancing and singing with Chelsie in EarthBeat Music programs, I smile a lot more. Chelsie is an excellent music educator with a wonderful way of supporting her students. I am appreciative of her approach, patience and all that I have learned since I started. Chelsie creates a fun, safe and supportive space where I can drum, dance, strum, sing and learn with other people that want to do the same. I am grateful for all the creative opportunities that Chelsie brings to us such as the variety of classes, workshops with the Masters, intergenerational drum circles, and more through EarthBeat Music and other community venues.  I thank her for spreading joy and peace.

    — Aimée D

  • EMPOWERING

Participating in EarthBeat Music has been an incredibly enriching experience, both musically and personally. The programs create a welcoming space for learning, expression, and connection, where rhythm becomes a shared language of joy and resilience. Being part of this community has strengthened my sense of belonging and deepened my appreciation for the cultural traditions we honor through drumming. Whether playing, singing, or simply listening, each session leaves me feeling energized and inspired.

    — Kathleen McGowan

  • WELCOMING

West African drumming as an art form and community are a huge part of my life now and it all began at EarthBeat Music.  Chelsie is a community-building force of nature and an incredible teacher. I have taken classes with her and all of the teachers she has brought to the studio for 10 years. West African drumming has added so much joy to my life, to my family’s life, and to my entire school and friend community.  We are so lucky to have EarthBeat Music and Chelsie close by!

    — Tamara Woolsey Davis

  • ACCESSIBLE

I joined an intergenerational drum circle due to Chelsie’s reputation and recommendation from several friends, and then took a dunduns drumming series.  I have learned new rhythms, gained a better appreciation for drumming along with its history and meaning.  I’ve always had the best experience with Chelsie, whether in our more formal classes or at a drum jam. Chelsie is a great teacher: so kind, energetic, fun, knowledgeable and patient. She makes drumming accessible to everyone and has given me inspiration to keep learning.

    — Nina Stark

  • INSPIRING

I absolutely love Chelsie’s classes. Over the past 12-15 years, I've taken many different kinds of classes, but her drumming classes truly feel like home and bring me SO much joy. Her genuine loving spirit shines through in EVERYTHING she does.

Attending my first community drumming circle was an unforgettable experience. The energy, connection, and love Chelsie brought to the event immediately drew me in.  With each class, I learn new drumming skills, a deeper understanding of the djembe's rich history and culture, and a strong sense of connection, confidence, and joy.

Each class is filled with love and community. Chelsie's extensive knowledge of West African drumming inspires me to build connections with other drummers while supporting my personal growth. The recap videos Chelsie sends each week are a great help in reinforcing what we've learned.

    — Lisa Meade

  • ACCEPTANCE

I was walking outside the studio one day and heard this strong beat coming from the studio, and I thought it sounded really good, and I looked in the window and saw all these people, ALL of whom were playing their drums, and ALL of whom had big smiles on their faces, and I said to myself: “I need to be a part of that!” And that’s how my music journey began with Chelsie and Drum In Joy!

Chelsie has taught me that we all belong, regardless if we’ve been drumming for years or we’re just starting; there’s room at the drumming table for everyone.

Chelsie creates a safe space for drumming, giving her students room to experiment and expand their learning experience at their own pace. I leave every class with a smile, a spring in my step, and a grateful heart, knowing how lucky we are to have her in our community.

    — Becky C

  • BELONGING

What attracted me initially was curiosity, and from the moment I started I have gained friendships and the ability to play musical instruments!  I have embraced a community of like minded people who love making music. I am guided by an ultra positive upbeat musically gifted teacher. Wildly authentic and fun.

Chelsie has introduced this area to a community of master drummers whose life work entails spreading unspeakable joy and the love of teaching to others. Grateful!

    — Lori G

  • CAMARADERIE

Our senior group with Chelsie’s leadership gave us the opportunity to join a drumming class.   I am so happy I did.  I love drumming mainly because of Chelsie. She brings so much knowledge of every aspect of drumming, and is such a calming and welcoming person; you feel the love as soon as you enter the room.

I am almost 70 and never had the opportunity to play an instrument so it has been so exciting for me to be with a group of people led by such a great person who accepts all of our abilities. Every week I look forward  to drumming!

    — Benita P.

  • FULFILLING

I had an interest in drumming and I saw an ad for the Women’s Drumming cruise on the Mohawk Maiden. I joined the cruise, loved it and wanted more!  Drumming feels like something I’ve been waiting for all my life.  Chelsie is an amazing teacher! Whether you’re a beginner or ready for more advanced playing, she knows exactly what you need to keep growing as a drummer. She has the most positive and encouraging personality, and helps students find their confidence. Chelsie also has a deep respect for traditions and the masters, passing that on to her students and keeping those touchstones of culture alive in our community.

    — Maddy Scotto

  • CONNECTION

For a long time, drumming has been one of my life goals, yet I didn't know where to start and how to connect. I used to just bang on a drum. That was okay, until a certain point. Colleagues invited me to join them at a summer drum circle organized by EarthBeat Music. Then I learned that there are specific rhythms to learn with stories/history/geography behind them. I was in.

The summer EarthBeat drum circles showed me that the people who join in are so nice. As a lifelong learner, djembe called me.  What could be better? Nice, welcoming people, more knowledge, some new skills, and great fun all mixed into one! Now I can bang on my drum all day, hear the echoes from the hillside, and smile to my heart's content; joyfully looking forward to the next class!

When in class, Chelsie makes everyone feel competent and confident on their own level, that mistakes are opportunities to figure things out. It's not where you've been. It's not where you are now. It's where you are going that counts. Chelsie goes out of her way to help us all see the way through her kindness, caring, and expertise in helping people feel joy in life.

    — Sue K

  • LIFE-CHANGING

My friend encouraged me to start drumming.  Hesitant at first, I soon became enamored with my new adventure.  My initial sessions were held via Zoom, which let me learn and goof up without embarrassment.  The final session was a large in-person session/drum circle and from then on, I was absolutely hooked!  Chelsie is an amazing teacher and human being.  She radiates the joy of drumming.  I have gained confidence, several drums (!), laughter and friends.  Drumily: says it all.

    — Anne Dwyer

  • HEART-FULL

I was encouraged by another EarthBeat Music student to check out possible lessons and I joined the Strum in Joy class. I was very new at the ukulele and had never played a string instrument.

I love Chelsie's approach to teaching the ukulele. She breaks down the pieces and we work on different skills and techniques. Everyone in the class is at a different level and we all play together.  She modifies her lessons to fit each students' needs, allowing for progress for everyone. I also enjoy the themes of the music we learn and the threads we create with each other and the community.  We sing, we laugh, and we share our desire to play the ukulele.

    — Tera

  • UPLIFTING

While on a trip to Mexico, I experienced the pull of drumming and how deeply it resonated with me. I wanted to take a deeper dive into the sacred power of group and individual drumming. When I moved to this area I discovered EarthBeat Music and never imagined.

I am learning that I am capable of learning and that the process is great for developing new neural pathways. Drumming with others allows me to experience that we are all on the same path and there are no mistakes, only opportunities to continue to learn.

Chelsie is an exceptionally welcoming teacher. She provides a safe learning space for everyone. Many of the people I have met do not have previous music/drumming backgrounds. Her contagious enthusiasm combined with her ability to break down complex rhythms into small steps which build up provides each student with the opportunity to realize that they can indeed learn what initially seemed insurmountable is amazing all while making it fun!

    — ML Hansen

  • FRIENDSHIP

I started because Chelsie is a “pied piper” and I was looking for new friends and activities after the passing of my husband.  I started w Drum in Joy for Beginners and quickly learned that the community of drummers were always learning and sharing.  Drumming is a challenge for the brain.  Drumming is a community of friends with a passion not just for drumming but being activists in the world around us. Drumming draws you into a community that supports and encourages you to seek joy and release.

    — Julie S.

  • ELEVATING

I initially became interested in drumming when I happened upon a drum circle at Fish Creek Marina a few years ago. Since then, I would try to attend as many of the public drum circles as possible. And I finally signed up for a drumming class.   I have gained a love of drumming (other than Native American drumming) A new tribe to be with, and a feeling of kinship and community. And I also gained the purchase of a drum!

I am very grateful for all the support that Chelsie has given me and the heartfelt welcome that she always extends. Her energy and enthusiasm are fantastic. And during my private guitar lessons, I learned more from her in the first two classes than I had in the past with two other instructors!

    — Paula Franchomme

  • LIBERATING

What attracted me to EarthBeat Music programming was Chelsie’s positivity and ease, and the unbridled group fun and joy.  I didn’t have to know how to read music - I could just feel it.

I now have an “I can do it”confidence, and expanded from visual arts to musical arts. I finally reached beyond the counting to a natural freedom of body/soulful/heartfelt connectedness.

Friendships, love, lots of hugs, smiles, peace, and an understanding of why my Father would smile when he was playing his accordion by heart!  My Father has been dead now for over 20 years. He suffered deeply with depression;I now understand why playing music made him smile.  Music heals the soul and surely connects us as one.

    — Sharon M. Gavitt

  • GROWTH

The first time I became aware of the offerings, something inside me lit up and knew I needed to try it.

Learning a new skill (not just drumming itself, but more: keeping tempo, clearing my mind, playing with a group), personal growth, community, joy, learning about other cultures, sense of inner calm.

It's hard to put into words the magic of drumming with Chelsie/EarthBeat.  The community, the drumming, all of it together is like nothing else I have experienced. I find myself craving to return to it on a daily basis. So deeply thankful this offering exists in my community.

    — Sara K

  • MINDFULNESS

We are now in our second Drum in Joy series with Chelsie. We signed up originally to participate in a new activity that we could share. Since the beginning we have experienced such fun. It has enhanced our social life through classes and participation in Drum Circles in public spaces. We have gained mindfulness as we learn new drumming patterns and  as we add new patterns and drum together in harmony. There is a sense of satisfaction in being part of a large group of like minded individuals. We very much enjoy the sounds we create together.  Chelsie and the other DiJ students are so supportive of each other, and we appreciate the videos of our classes Chelsie sends to us so we can practice at home.  Our overall experience is fabulous. We look forward to our weekly class and opportunities to drum together with other groups.

    — Barb & Jake Hurley

  • BELONGING

I started drumming in 2022 when my oldest friend invited me to a drum circle—and I was instantly hooked! Chelsie has created such a supportive environment for every student, regardless of skill level or experience. I’ve never once felt embarrassed or alone if I haven’t gotten the music just yet. The drumming community feels like a family—everyone encourages and uplifts one another, no matter where they are on their journey.

What initially brought me to Earth Beat Music was the invitation from my friend, but after that first drum circle, I felt a surge of excitement. That excitement fueled my enthusiasm to try something completely new.

Since then, I’ve gained so much—confidence in my drumming, meaningful friendships, and a sense of tribe that came into my life at the perfect moment. I’ve even introduced others to drumming because I love it that much. It’s become a joyful and grounding escape from the noise of the outside world. No matter what mood I’m in, after a class or drum circle, I always leave feeling lighter, energized, and more connected. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to try drumming and am so happy I’ve stayed and have continued to play. Thank you, Chelsie, for bringing this drumming and studio to our community and welcoming to all students from all over at different levels.

    — Susan Rhoades

  • DEDICATION

What attracted me to this program: Of course, wanting to support Chelsie in her endeavors was a part of the decision to give drumming a try, but REALLY, as I am getting older, I wanted to challenge myself to learn new things and meet new people, but it had to be something fun and educational, and not so challenging that it became stressful. After attending some of the events sponsored by Chelsie and her dedicated followers, I decided to join a class, since everyone (drummers) was so congenial and fun and LOVED drumming! Taking lessons was one of the best things I have ever done for myself! I have become part of a community of wonderful, lively, talented people!!!

Gained from experience: a new passion and appreciation for a musical instrument that I never even considered or previously knew anything about, love of the phenomenal type of music that Chelsie and other masters teach, new friendships, and a willingness to try other new things that came from the confidence I received while participating in drumming classes. (I cannot read music and have previously never learned to play any other musical instrument.)

Overall experience: As her mom, I can tell you that Chelsie puts her heart and soul into anything she undertakes, and never does anything halfway! She is a lively, fun, exceptional, caring, knowledgeable teacher (and I say that as a drumming student), and I look forward to the classes where we learn, laugh and play exciting drum music at every class. She also invites other talented Masters in to supplement the learning experience, or to teach about other forms of drumming. I cherish the new friendships I have made, and I think my brain thanks me for this exciting, but doable new experience!

    — Joni Henderson (full disclosure: I am Chelsie's Mom)

  • SAFE

"Strumily " for me is a safe place to disconnect and reset.

It's a special place where like minded folks meet to play music, create community and joy while improving their musical skills. Raising the vibration!

And when Strumily and Drumily come together at EarthBeat Music celebrations, it's truly magical!

    — Carole Liggett

  • COMMUNITY

I first met Chelsie in 2020 at an Autumnal Equinox event at Hudson Crossing Park and was introduced to her by a dear friend, Susan M. I immediately asked if she taught beginning classes for people with NO experience at all, and she said "Yes!"  A couple of months later, I took my first class and came home with my newly-purchased djembe!  I took every class I could - and still do - and had the amazing opportunity to take several classes with M'Bemba Bangoura.  At a time when the world was social distancing and masked, we created a drumming community that, to this day, feeds the soul.  In the past 4+ years, I have added a krin, a dance sangban and a set of dunduns to my menagerie of instruments. I have also been able to take classes with a number of master musicians including Bolokada Conde, Sayon Camara, Namory Keita, Seny Daffe, Abou Sylla (amazing balafon class!), and Moussa Traore.  I am so grateful for Chelsie and the drumily (yes, we are a drumming family) that she has created. Her ability to share these West African rhythms, stories, dances and master teachers/performers with all of us is truly a gift!

    — Christine Brooks

  • HEALING

With all the chaos and turmoil in the world, I was looking for something grounding and challenging to reconnect me with the better parts of humanity.

I have gained a deeper appreciation for West African music, a better sense of musical and spiritual rhythm, and a deeper connection with both my local and global community

Even having no experience, Chelsie immediately made me and my partner welcome as part of the "Drumily." We initially only took one drumming class but loved it so much that we took another and even participated in a special workshop with two incredible guest master drummers from Guinea. Chelsie is a consummate teacher who creates a safe, transformative, and respectful space in a world where such spaces are disappearing at an alarming rate. Drumming (or strumming or dancing or singing) in an EarthBeat Music class feels like an act of resistance, creativity, and hope. Everyone should take at least one class in their lifetime; we look forward to taking our third (hopefully of many) soon.

    — Adrian A.

  • EXCELLENCE

I had previously participated in community drum circles hosted by Chelsie and was always very impressed with her genuine warmth and charisma.  She has a way about her that makes you feel welcomed and included.  At that time I was playing Djembe, but due to hand arthritis I've had to switch to the DunDuns, so when I saw she was teaching an intro class for DunDuns, I signed up immediately.

Not only did she display that wonderful, caring positive energy that I saw at the community drum circles, she is also an excellent teacher.  I personally taught for 40 years so it was easy for me to recognize Chelsie's strength in her presentation and her ability to breakdown the rhythm into small and progressive ways making the pattern very easy to learn.

Chelsie is everything you would want in a teacher-knowledgeable, patient, enthusiastic and fun!

For those reasons, she is the best drumming teacher I have had the privilege of taking a class from.

    — Teri

  • CONTAGIOUS

Having no prior experience with EarthBeat Music, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for Women Sing for Peace. I’ve always loved to sing, but ever since elementary school chorus, I’ve carried a bit of a complex about my singing ability. Still, my passion for music—and for promoting peace—pushed me to give it a shot.

Attending the Women Sing for Peace workshop turned out to be one of the most joyful experiences I’ve ever had! I found myself sitting comfortably in a circle with a group of women I’d never met before. After some warm introductions and easy-to-follow guidance, Chelsie led us through simple, beautiful songs from around the world, accompanied by drums and bells. I was encouraged to sing freely and confidently, without judgment.

By the end, I felt uplifted, deeply connected, and filled with a sense of peace. Even months later, just thinking about that day brings a smile to my face and a warm feeling to my heart.

Chelsie’s joy and love are absolutely contagious—she’s someone you simply love being around.

    — Donna Olson

  • CONNECTION

What attracted me to EarthBeat Music was the combination of instruction, community, and personal enrichment.  What I gained was JOY!, confidence, a new passion, energy, strength.

Chelsie is truly inspiring, not just as an artist and teacher, but as a community leader and a human being in general. Every session with her is full of laughter and good vibes - we all end up smiling and cracking up and feeling so great! Drumming with her has brought me so much peace, energy, and a real sense of connection - to myself, to local and global communities, and to the earth. I’ve really enjoyed hearing about the West African cultures our rhythms come from, and it’s been amazing getting to learn from some of the masters too! I whole-heartedly recommend attending any class, event, or drum circle hosted by EarthBeat Music.

    — Patty Hughes

  • MAGICAL

I have participated in both drumming and strumming programs over the years, starting with a drumming series hosted by the Saratoga Springs Public Library.

What attracted me to continue learning at EarthBeat Music was driving or walking by the store front, and wondering what the heck was going on there, and how a small arts-oriented business could be thriving in a small town.

What I have gained from this experience, is more of an appreciation for ALL kinds of music, and those who learn it, play it, and teach it! It is not just making noise! I have learned better concentration, focus, brain and hand coordination.   I have gained self confidence and have even broken out in song!

I have made new friends, which isn’t always easy as a mature adult.  We have a diverse group of students, all ages.  So happy I stopped to find out what it is all about!

    — Susan Gaddor aka Sprinkles

  • JOY

Chelsie's energy and passion and my interest in West African culture and music is what brought me to class. I feel a great connection, joy, inspiration and a newfound interest in drumming! Chelsie is a gifted teacher who creates an atmosphere of joy and connection in her classes. As a newbie to it all, I felt her guide was accessible to learning and she was always open to answering questions and helping us learn in fun and unique ways.

    — Ann Saffi Biasetti

  • UPBEAT

Chelsie is one of the most positive people I know.  She brings joy to everyone, and is a very big advocate for creating a supportive, welcoming, community. Drumming on the djembe is very grounding for me.  With so much turmoil in this world, it's refreshing and emotionally stabilizing to drum with this community.  I'd also like to add that Chelsie is a wonderful teacher, and has the ability to teach all levels in one class while still allowing everyone to feel confident in their abilities.

    — Deb

  • FUN

I was introduced to djembe drumming and a drum circle at a women’s retreat in the summer of 2021.  I loved it!  Several months later I saw an advertisement for a free 4 lesson session of Hand-Drumming for Seniors given by Chelsie of EarthBeat Music.  I loved that even more!  A week and a half later I bought my first djembe and soon after started to drum with Chelsie by Zoom in the Resilient Drummers class.  The rest is history!

Drumming with Chelsie and the other EarthBeat Music drummers has been a big part of Community for me.  It is uplifting and empowering to drum rhythms together on a regular basis.  The challenge of it all is rather like learning a foreign language and is good for my aging brain.  Perhaps what I treasure most of all is being in Chelsie's sphere of positivity and loving energy on a regular basis.

    — Sue Kenyon

Meet EarthBeat Music's Mama

Chelsie Henderson

I have been on the path of music teacher for as long as I can remember, as I have always loved sharing the wonders of music with others. From persuading family members to listen to new piano songs I was learning as a child, to skipping general education classes to spend extra time in the music room where I found safety and acceptance as a teenager, to immersing myself in Classical choral singing and conducting as a young adult and then West African drumming years later, music has been my guiding light and spreading joy has been my assignment.
