Second Week of July Haps

Dear EarthBeat Music Family,

The second week of July offers the first of four classes of Rhythm Basics with Maddy, and the first EarthBeat Community Drum + Song Circle of the Summer! This first Drum Circle will be facilitated by Kathleen McGowan with the Rhythm Sisters.

All donations at this Circle will go to the MaiSam Foundation, an organization created by educators Abdul Samassa and Abdoulaye Youssouf Maiga to provide resources for children and their schools in Mali, West Africa, as well as to VanFM, an organization to support youth soccer programming (see photo below). Cash, Venmo, PayPal or Zelle will be accepted. Email Abdul if you won’t be at the Circle but would still like to donate.

Just a note that I have room for two more 1:1 students this Summer and will still honor the Summer Solstice Lessons Special: two 45-minute 1:1 lessons on djembe/dunduns or ukulele for $75. Just email me with your interest and I will share payment details and a direct link to schedule your two lesson times!

For those of you who will be visiting the studio this Summer for classes and 1:1’s, you will meet the studio cat, Professor Lupin (see photo below). Lupin is settling in here for the timebeing and will LOVE to meet you! You may also see his brother-from-another-mother Earl Grey while I work on finding EG’s next placement. Lupin has made himself very useful already by chasing a chipmunk out of the studio basement, and swiping away any flies and ants who dare make their way onto the ground floor.

Lastly, I have been letting go of some instruments that do not get enough love. If you or someone you know is interested in a gorgeous VistaPan Steel Pan, please give me a shout for the details (see photo below). I will also have a few previously appreciated djembes to move along in the coming weeks - just in time for drum circles!

Haven’t been in a music class since elementary school? Join Maddy to learn basic rhythm reading and terminology! Topics explored will include rhythm reading and dictation, time signatures, and polyrhythm. Beginners as well as students with some music background are very welcomed!

On Thursday evenings we will bask in the beats and sing with joyful voices at the magical Fish Creek Marina Pavilion. Bring a chair, a drum or other percussion, a song to share and/or dance along!

We are under cover, so these circles are rain or shine! Please park on the green near the pavilion, as seen in the featured photo :)
